How Does Acupuncture Work?

Why does a small needle possess such great healing power? Traditional Chinese medicine had discovered that by inserting a needle into the "Acupuncture Points" would re-balance vital energy (Chi) circulation in our body. It is said "to reduce what is excessive, increase what is deficient, warm what is cold, cool what is hot, circulate what is stagnant, move what is congealed, stabilize what is reckless, raise what is falling and lower what is rising." As the energy is circulated and balanced, it allows our body's self-healing system to work and ultimately heal the disease.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments needed varies from person to person. The average person has 1 to 2 times per week for 4 weeks. For complex or long-standing conditions, one or two treatments a week for several months is recommended. For acute problems, fewer visits are needed. For healing maintenance, we suggest four sessions a year.

What is the Needle Like?

Acupuncture is done with extremely thin flexible needles made of stainless and are sterilized. There is nothing special about the needles, they are merely a tool to correct the energy imbalance in the body.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Most patients do not feel the insertion of the fine acupuncture needles. There is often a brief "needle prick" sensation as the needle passes through the skin. As the needle begins to work and the energy effect occurs, one may feel numbness, heat, dull aching, tingling, heaviness, soreness, distension, or an electric shock. The presence of needle sensations suggests good response to acupuncture.

What Happens With the Needle?

The needles are left in place for about 15 to 20 minutes. They may be rotated by the doctor of sometimes stimulated directly. Once your session is done, the needles are disposed.

What are the Side Effects?

Side effects due to acupuncture are rare. Most side effects are minor and may include occasional dizziness, usually after the first treatment and slight bleeding or bruising after the needles are withdrawn. Infection at the site of the needle prick and other side effects are very rare.

What Will My Response Be During a Session?

Most patients with pain and/or tension feel relaxed and relieved during treatment. Many patients may feel an increasing in energy and bouyancy due to the stimulation effect of acupuncture. The response towards the treatment will vary from patient to patient. Some will feel an immediate response while others need several treatments or have a delayed response of 2 to 3 months.
